Star Blazers premiered in Japan as Space Battleship Yamato (English Translation) in 1974, then was aired in the US and Canada beginning in 1978. The show is set in 2199 when life on Earth is heading toward its final doom from the inhabitants of the planet Gamilon. People can no longer live on the Earth's surface, since the Gamilons have used bombs on it and it is now radioactive. They have built underground cities and now exist there, safe for the moment from the radiation. That radiation is seeping further into the ground and within a year everyone on Earth will be dead from it. A space craft crashed on Mars with a message from the planet Iscandar that they have a machine that can get rid of the radioactivity. There's only one problem - Iscandar is 148,000 light years away. The people of Earth need the machine within a year, so the time is now to take their frist trip out in the vast universe, and quickly.
